The archaeological discoveries at Chibuene, Vilankulo, shines light on the history of Southern Africa, from 700 AD until today

Discoveries at Chibuene

The significance of the village on the Chibuene beach as a trading port for Arab traders since 700 AD into the Interior of Southern Africa is analysed and interpreted in the presentation which forms part of the event. There is also a visit to the site and a meal prepared from seafood and vegetables typically eaten in this part of the world over the last few hundreds of years.

It began in the year 700 AD

The oldest trade items found at Chibuene, namely beads from Persian origin, dates back to 700 AD. The picture on top shows the layers of shells and sand covering beads and pot shards of the villagers that once lived and traded here.

Chibuene bead series named after the discovery at the site

Beads found at the bottom layers of Chibuene were also found in the Interior at places like Mapungubwe, Manyikene and Great Zimbabwe. This type of bead became known as Chibuene bead series.

Why did the village thrive here on the Mozambican coast?

Conditions were ideal for creating a trading post where villagers could gather in larger numbers eating from the abundance of seafood in the Vilankulo bay and drinking the fresh water from lake Nhaucati just on the other side of the dune.

The tour of the Archeological site includes the following:

1 A cup of tea, coffee or cold drink accompanied with fresh smoked oysters with buttered bread from the Chibuene beach.

2 A talk on the history of Chibune and the African society in which it lived from its initiation in 700AD up to today.

3 A visit of the site and inspection of the layers of occupation through hundreds of years starting in the first Millennium and ending today.

4 A lunch of food that was typically consumed in this area, but spiced up with spices that suit our modern tastes.

  1. Good morning! I encountered Chris on the beach in front of Vilamar and he told me about this website. We’re a group of six people and would love to book for this talk. Will you be able to give me available times for tomorrow? (Wednesday 24 August). Thanks, Dirk
